Decarbonisation
SEAT S.A.’s decarbonisation programme marks the roadmap to reduce CO2 emissions throughout the whole car value chain considering the entire lifecycle of our vehicles: supply chain, production, use and end-of-life.
Our main goal is to reach net carbon neutrality in our facilities by 2040 as a step towards becoming a net-carbon-neutral company by 2050, in line with the Volkswagen Group’s decarbonisation targets.
The electrification of our portfolio is the main lever for decarbonisation since electric vehicles generate up to 60% fewer CO2 emissions than combustion cars*. Our electric and electrified vehicles embody our ongoing efforts towards decarbonisation. At Terramar, Sitges, we unveiled our vision for 2025, including our electrified heroes: the CUPRA Tavascan CUPRA Terramar, and CUPRA Raval.
Still, we are working to reduce the CO2 emissions of our production processes to reach our decarbonisation goals. Since 2010, we have cut CO2 emissions in our facilities by 69%, as all the electricity consumed in our factories has come from renewable sources since 2012. Thanks to efficiency measures, the energy consumption of our factories has decreased by 33% since 2010, and we keep working to reduce it further.
The expansion of SEAT al Sol, the company’s photovoltaic plant, with 39,000 new solar panels, will triple our capacity to self-generate renewable energy from 2025. The new solar installation will be one of the largest in Europe in terms of self-consumption.
We also foster the use of trains and trucks powered by sustainable fuels (HVO & biogas) to reduce CO2 emissions of logistic processes.

Circular Economy
The circular economy promotes reducing the usage of raw materials and fosters reusing, recycling and giving a second life to waste by turning it into new products.
In our cars, we are developing state-of-the-art interiors made of recycled and renewable materials. Our goal is to reach a share of circular materials in our vehicles of 40% by 2040.
We push innovation by using recycled and bio-based materials in our vehicles. We have introduced SEAQUAL® YARN – derived from recycled marine plastic –, Dinamica® microfiber - produced by using 73% recycled polyester and a water-based process - in some parts of our car interiors. We have also incorporated Bcomp’s, flax-based composites for the CUP Bucket seats in some of our models, which not only increases the bio-based materials, but also enables a reduction of 49% of CO2 emissions in seats’ production compared to the previous version produced with carbon and glass fibre.
In our manufacturing processes, we are working on progressive waste reduction through reuse, recycling or recirculation. By 2025, we aim to decrease the waste to landfill in production by 60% compared to 2010 and reach zero waste in 2050.
SEAT S.A. is actively engaged in research projects focused on second-life applications and recycling, such as RELOAD (to boost technologies to recover high-value materials in the electric vehicle value chain), ECLIPSE (investigating new technological routes for recycling & recovery of complex polymeric waste at the end of the vehicles’ life) and TREASURE (to evaluate different circular economy scenarios in the automotive sector).
Ecosystem Preservation
To guarantee an environmentally sustainable future, we must ensure the protection and conservation of natural ecosystems by minimising the impact of our activity.
We have reduced the environmental impact of our facilities by 53% since 2010. Water consumption for manufacturing a car has been cut by 45% in the same period, and waste generation and solvent emissions have been reduced by 79% and 46%, respectively.
We also control and mitigate emissions to the air, water and soil and implement biodiversity enhancement projects at the local level.
